Kommentar/Beschreibung

In this course, we are going to examine issues of women’s health in American History in order to explore socio-political and cultural dynamics and power structures in US society. We are taking concepts of womanhood and illness as windows into the ideological framework(s) of the United States. We are interested in how illness and health was constructed, experienced, talked about, treated and re-conceptualized with a focus on the nineteenth century. It will emerge how many issues that we consider fairly recent phenomena such as veganism, homeopathy, exercising/body fitness, dieting and so forth have their roots in that time period.

Methodologically, we will be mainly concerned with the study of primary text such as speeches, first person accounts, podcasts, short stories, newspaper articles etc. We are going to practice the systematic analysis of such texts and ways of contextualizing and interpreting our findings. Basically, this is a continuation of what you practiced in the tutorials of the Basismodul but now with a focus on textual analysis.

Studienleistung:
Throughout the semester, you will be working in groups of 3-5 on a variety of tasks. Your Studienleistung (as a group) consists in designing a research project around a particular theme. The theme will be allotted to you (see weeks highlighted in green). You will have to prepare the following things:
1. Bibliography with at least 10 scholarly sources
2. Literature review (an oral summary of existing research)
3. Research question
4. Systematic analysis of one or more primary texts (either prescribed by me or selected by yourselves)
5. Interpretation, contextualization of your findings.

Prüfungsleistung:
Term paper. Deadline Sept. 30, 2024.
