Sports play an important role in American culture and society that goes beyond mere popularity. Not only do they serve as vehicles for transmitting values such as fair play, justice, and teamwork, but they also act as the “social glue” that binds people from different social and ethnic backgrounds together (e.g., social and racial integration). In this course, we will explore the history and meaning of sport in American culture and examine the role of sport in America’s society today. Special attention will be paid to primary sources (historical documents) from colonial America to the present, literary texts, movies, and, of course, the rules and regulations of typically American sports such as Baseball, Football, and Basketball.
Required Texts:
- Don DeLillo, Endzone (Picador, 2011)
