Kommentar/Beschreibung

The genre of the “Gothic” novel began with Horace Walpole’s Castle of Otranto (1765), an intricate family story, set in an ancient castle. The genre, combining the narration of blood-curling events, romance, and strong emotions with stock elements such as castles, dark forests, and dungeons, quickly became fashionable. That Gothic novels used supernatural elements heightened their appeal. Among its most famous representatives are Ann Radcliffe, whose immensely successful Romance of the Forest (1791) we will discuss, as well as Matthew Lewis, whose famous Monk (1796) tells a hair-raising story upsetting many contemporary readers (scans of several chapters will be provided). Only “mildly” Gothic in comparison is Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey (1818), a parody of the genre, which also implicitly comments on enthusiastic readers of Gothic fiction.

In this seminar we will discuss the genre’s narrative strategies, gender roles, the uncanny, spatial structure, the representation of communities and of the state, the reputation of Gothic novels as being immoral and dangerous, as well as their readerships.
Students are warned that the novels contain graphic scenes depicting sexual encounters and violence which may be considered upsetting.
Since this seminar will be conducted as block seminar consisting of four individual days, participants are asked to read the texts in advance. Please acquaint yourselves thoroughly with Walpole’s Castle of Otranto by 28 April, with Radcliffe’s Romance of the Forest by 13 May, and with Austen’s Northanger Abbey by 24 June. Further shorter text, made available as scans, will also be discussed.

The primary texts given below must be purchased in advance of the teaching term and in exactly the formats stated below. There will be short assignments during the semester, and an oral presentation. The module examination (“Prüfungsleistung”) will be a term paper (8,000 words) on the novels and topics discussed in class. Further details will be introduced in the first session.

Please note that prior registration for the course via StudIP is mandatory.
