Kommentar/Beschreibung

The 1960s saw the emergence of an American counterculture that rejected outright “America’s shrill postwar triumphalism” (Braunstein and Doyle 6). Discontent with “the establishment” – its values, politics, and views – that governed the United States and other democratic countries around the world (e.g., the United Kingdom, West Germany, and the Netherlands), countercultural activists opted for individualism and freedom, promoting new ways of thinking about a wide range of issues, including lifestyle (such as communes vs. the nuclear family), women’s rights (feminism), sexuality, psychoactive drugs, military aggression (peace vs. war), ethnic groups (civil rights, diversity), and environment. Out of this disillusionment with “America” and its promises (e.g., the “American Dream”) new social-political movements were born (e.g., Beat Generation, Free Speech movement, second-wave feminism, gay liberation movement, and American Indian Movement). We will focus specifically on the American counterculture in the 1960s and 70s and explore the ways in which contemporary countercultural movements (e.g., Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, and Fridays For Future) are rooted in the movements of the 1960s and possibly before. We will investigate the complex nexus of issues and multifaceted subcultures from various angles (historical, political) and how they are treated in diverse media (literature, film, music).
