Comment/Description

"System change, not climate change" has been a persistent demand from the climate justice movement in recent years. This seminar explores possible changes to the political system in by looking at instructive case studies such as the mobility sector and the extractive industries, among others.

Humans have altered the eco-system they are part of from the beginning. However, the human footprint on natural systems has increased dramatically over the past decades. Most notably, human-induced climate change has effects on eco-systems as well as social systems. This seminar aims to look at climate change from a systems perspective and asks how political systems are already affected by climate change and how they will be affected in the future.

The seminar will be divided into three parts. The first part will be devoted to the study of systems thinking in political science and the social science more broadly.
Secondly, we will engage with case studies on climate change in different political settings. Thirdly, we will look into ways how to combine these insights. Can world systems be politically steered? Are there tipping points of political power? How do political institutions such as states and international organisations (IOs) change in a changing climate?
