Voraussetzungen Students who have successfully passed their Basismodul Einführung in das Studium der angloamerikanischen Kulturwissenschaft (ANG.02620.02) are welcome to this class that deals with civil rights and social movements in 20th century America, particularly the evolvement and development of civil rights for Native Americans, African Americans, and women in America (feminist movement).
Lernorganisation In this class we are using the textbook by Michael Scott-Baumann and Mark Stacey, Civil Rights and Social Movements in the Americas (Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 2013). Please, get hold of this book [ISBN 978-1-107-69751-5] [ca. 18 €].
In order for students to pick up some skills necessary in academia, we will spend some time on how to do presentations, how to do research, and how to write papers. The university library (OPAC, GBV, KVK and other databases) will be a topic as will be the Internet as a research tool (JStor, Google Scholar etc.). In addition, there will be an introduction to CITAVI and how to use that bibliographical tool. Our model for all written work will be the MLA and its style sheet (7th ed.).
Leistungsnachweis Please, do not miss more than three classes. (The legal view on Anwesenheitspflicht is preposterous as it ignores the fact that we practice speaking and arguing in English in our seminars.) All students are expected to participate actively in these discussions. Also, students must present in class (20 mins. plus discussion) on a topic to be arranged with the lecturer. It must be accompanied by a handout (Thesenpapier). Please, send your handout to the lecturer a week before your presentation is due. A copy of the reviewed handout must be available to all students on the day of presentation. Reading assignments (secondary literature) will be given on a weekly basis. Studying in groups is encouraged.
At the end of the semester BA students will have to write an essay/Hausarbeit (ca. 12-14 pages). The BA essays are due at the end of September.

The rule of law (Rechtsstaatlichkeit) is taken for granted by anybody who has grown up in a country that shows respect for the law as a guiding principle. The rights to vote in elections, to equal treatment under the law, to fair trial and free speech, to exercising the religion one prefers and to gathering in protest against authorities one disagrees with had to be fought for, however. African Americans were freed after the Civil War (1861-65), but that did not mean they were actually able to exercise their civil rights in elections. Why did the number of African Americans registered to vote in Mississippi go up from 7% in 1964 to 68% in 1968? In this seminar we will focus on how discrimination was practiced, how it was made a political issue, and how the law was adjusted to make discrimination illegal.
In order to understand the origins of the Civil Rights Movement in the 20th century we will look back into American history briefly focusing on the Declaration of Independence, President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (1863), and the Amendments to the Constitution passed in the late 1860s. In order to better understand the development of the CRM after World War II, a sketch of Washington's political institutions is necessary (House of Representatives, Senate). This includes a brief discussion of federal and state responsibilities. Then we will be able to explore the CRM and learn how Native and African Americans claimed their share of democracy in America. Later we will look at the achievements of the social and women's movements. At the end of the seminar we will ask what the CRM has achieved.
Students will learn that having the same rights as others does not mean they can be practiced unless there is a strong power that is willing and able to punish disregard. In order to have governments actually do what they preach, political consciousness is required as much as strong popular support.
