Comment/Description

The aim of this course is threefold: first, we will focus on “border studies” and engage with various concepts and terms that are revelant to this approach (e.g., dichotomies such as “self” vs. “other” and “inside” vs. “outside” etc., “borderlands,” “sites of contestation,” and immigration); second, we will examine geographical borders – especially the Canadian-U.S. and the Mexican-U.S. borders – and study the ways in which literary narratives about border crossings highlight these issues and other issues (gender, identity, race, and class); third, we will move to science fiction and the “new frontier” in order to explore imaginary ways of crossing boundaries (e.g., genres, humans and robots/animals). Our journey will take us from actual to metaphorical boundaries and include literary texts (e.g., Thomas King’s short story “Borders” and the graphic novel adaptation; Ana Castillo’s The Guardians; and Octavia E. Butler’s short story “Bloodchild”), the Netflix documentary Immigrant Nation, and science fiction TV series (e.g., Westworld or The Expanse).

Required Texts:

- King, Thomas and Natasha Donovan. Borders. Little, Brown Ink, 2022.
- Ana Castillo. The Guardians: A Novel. Random, 2008.
- Other course material will be made available on the ILIAS platform.
