Comment/Description

ZORA (“Unapologetic. Ours. A Medium publication for women of color.”) recently compiled a list of “the 100 greatest books ever written by African American women” and called it THE ZORA CANON (named after the Harlem Renaissance author Zora Neale Hurston). In this course, we will closely examine three outstanding and highly influential novels written by three famous African American women writers: Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937; e.g., Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 2013); Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer-prize-winning Beloved (1987; e.g., Vintage, 2016); and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah (2013; e.g., Harper Collins, 2017). We will not only trace the major themes and aesthetics of these three great works, but we will also explore some of the most important secondary sources that still govern literary criticism and our thought today.
