Conversation Analysis appeared in the 1970ies and began to ask questions about facts so seemingly trivial that they had thus far been overlooked by the majority of researchers: How does turn-taking work? How do people handle topic-changes in conversation? How do we correct ourselves and each other in conversation? etc. It turned out that there is a fascinating order behind these phenomena.
In this course we will try to discover some of the mechanisms behind communication, and we will look at authentic conversation to see how it works. For this, we will take a largely empirical approach. The data we will use comes from films and other sources.
