Comment/Description

This seminar will examine British attitudes towards being "at war". While material will most likely refer to a selection of Britain's imperial wars of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the two World Wars, decolonising conflicts, and post cold-war "interventions", the course is not supposed to be conducted centred on events. Instead, important fields of discourse and cultural practice, such as nationalism, pacifism, identity, propaganda, mentality, class, as well as individual and collective strategies and cultures of commemoration will form the basis of our inquiry.

This course will take place in a virtual environment, with a mixture of mostly synchronous sessions and an occasional period of asynchronous self-study.

Students are required to buy the following novel:
Pat Barker, Regeneration (Penguin, 2008), ISBN 9780141030937
