Kommentar/Beschreibung

Between ‘here’ and ‘there’, ‘home’ and ‘abroad’ and ‘self’ and ‘other’, travel inspires the traveler to reflect upon who she is. Travel writing as a genre accepted women authors much more readily than those genres considered to possess more “literary quality”—whatever that may be. Thus, the rich archive of women’s travel writing from the 19th century allows us to reflect upon the central question of how to write about a female self and produce a self-representation within and against the restrictions posed by societal conventions. We will touch upon questions of author and authenticity, gender ideology, national identity, race, political resistance or collaboration.
In this class, you will:
- Examine how women negotiated between sanctioned gender roles and self-expression during a time that was known for its pervasive and restrictive gender ideology
- Gain an understanding of major US-American discourses in the 19th century from women’s point of view (e.g. abolitionism, women’s rights, the position of the US in the world, etc.)
- Sharpen your analytical skills by practicing close and wide readings of primary texts
- Familiarize yourself with theoretical concepts from Feminist Criticism, Postcolonial Theory, and Life Writing Studies that will open up primary texts to new readings
The class is a seminar, not a lecture; that means it is based on your active participation. It requires you to commit to attentive reading of primary and secondary texts prior to our meetings and to collaborate in fostering a fruitful discussion culture in class.
