Comment/Description

The war in Ukraine has rekindled interest in the Cold War era (post-WWII – 1991) and its ‘cold’ rivalry between the two superpowers: the United States of America and the Soviet Union (and their respective allies). Focusing on the ways in which the “Cold War”-struggle was treated in American culture, we will trace the historical and cultural developments (historical approach: 1950-1990) and explore different cultural aspects of this period (cultural approach: politics, religion, and especially media). Our critical approaches to the Cold War era from a primarily American perspective include the analysis of historical sources (oral history), the analyses of radio and TV broadcasts, and, in particular, filmic representations and treatments of the Cold War.
