Comment/Description

This course will examine a remarkable decade in twentieth-century British cultural history. Following the rather bleak post-World War II period and the years of austerity during the 1950s, the 1960s turned out a colourful decade in more than one sense of the word. Fields of cultural practice to be considered will include music, art, film, and fashion. Furthermore, the topic also includes a political dimension, the 1960s being a decade of a rising consciousness concerning issues of gender, class, and global politics. Finally, the seminar will also consider the fluidity of cultural norms, as evinced in the commodifying transformation processes between counter-cultural ("underground"), mainstream, and pop-cultural phenomena.

This course will take place in a virtual environment, with a mixture of mostly synchronous sessions and an occasional period of asynchronous self-study.
