Comment/Description

Course Outline:

Throughout its history, English has been in contact with many other languages. One immediate result are the many words English has borrowed from other languages, ranging from aardvark to zucchini. Another, more far-reaching result is the emergence of pidgins and creoles as contact varieties. The basic idea of this course is to sketch the most important language contacts for the periods of Old, Middle and Early Modern English and then to select different settings, which have led to different types of contact in order to work out a typology and an ecology of contact scenarios.
