Kommentar/Beschreibung

Samaritan Hebrew is a dialect of ancient Hebrew which is still used liturgically by the Samaritans up to the present day. Most likely having originated from a northern ("Israelite") dialect of ancient Hebrew, as opposed the predominantly southern ("Judean") varieties that are generally associated with most of the Hebrew Bible, an earlier form of what became "Samaritan Hebrew" appears to have been the vernacular in the region of Samaria during the Late Second temple period. After the split between the adherents of the Israelite sanctuary at Mount Gerizim, i.e. the "Samaritans", and the followers of the Temple of Jerusalem in the late 2nd century BCE, this variety became the religious sociolect of the Samaritan community. In the course of this seminar, we will read and analyze texts from the Samaritan Pentateuch together, in order to study the central linguistic features of this dialect as well as early traits of Samaritan exegesis. Further, participants will gain an understanding of the diverse characteristics of Hebrew as spoken in the Hellenistic and Roman periods in addition to broader early Pentateuchal hermeneutics. The class takes place online. Good knowledge of Biblical Hebrew is necessary and required for participation. Interested stu-dents from other universities, both in Germany and abroad, are invited to express interest. (Please note that approval will be required for participation.) The course will be taught in English.
