Comment/Description

In this seminar, we will explore theories and perspectives on popular culture. Being constantly surrounded by artefacts and by social processes and practises that can be accounted for as part of popular culture, we find ourselves in a position where we seemingly take certain cultural phenomena and norms for granted. This seminar invites reflection on important aspects and processes of popular culture, such as the development of mass culture, culture industry and the commodification of culture, the transport and hegemony of ideology via culture, and postmodern tendencies that transform not only culture but society on the whole.

Examples to complement and illustrate theoretical approaches will be drawn from Anglophone cultures of the 19th and 20th centuries and will leave ample room to accommodate students' cultural interests.
