Lecture: Mechanical Properties of Solid Polymers Series of 15 seminar lectures as elective part of "Vertiefende Themen Weiche Materie” Lecturers: Dr. Rose Mary Michell Content: The mechanical properties of polymers are complex multivariable consequences of intrinsic and extrinsic factors; the interplay of those factors will determine, in consequence, the final application. Studying the relation between the final properties and the initial structure is essential for developing new materials. After completing this course, the student will be able to understand and, to some extent, predict the most general behavior of polymers. This knowledge is relevant to many industrial sectors (Medical devices, bio-compatible materials, packaging, among others) and the academic field. During this lecture, the following topics will be discussed: 1.- Preliminary Concepts 2.- Polymer Deformation Generalities 3.- Plastic Deformation Micromechanisms 4.- Tensile Mechanical Behavior (Low Velocity) 4.1- General information on tensile testing 4.2.- Relationship structure-processing-tensile mechanical properties 5.- Impact Mechanical Behavior (high speeds) 5.1- General information about the tensile test 5.2- Relationship structure-processing-mechanical properties at impact It is expected that the student participates actively during the lectures, discussions, and small exercises will be integrated into the lecture. Date/Time: Every Tuesday from 14:15 to 15:45 starting on April 2. Literature: 1. Young RJ y Lovell PA, Introduction to Polymers, 3da. Ed. Boca Ratón (EE.UU.): CRC Press & Hall, 2011 2.
