Kommentar/Beschreibung

In this seminar, we will examine how U.S. politics are presented in the Washington Post (WP) and other papers across the world. To this purpose, you will analyze the WP cover story each week, the contents and methods used in it, and compare these in an international press review to the manner in which other papers treat the same topic. In this way, you will keep up with the latest developments in U.S. American current affairs, you will practice the analytical skills necessary to understand and explain the makeup of news stories, and you will exercise engaging in and organizing your work on short notice as part of a group. The course requires you to examine a text critically, research the respective background, and present and discuss your results in class. You will be asked to create a blog entry accompanying your presentation, and a portfolio as Modulleistung. Students will need to subscribe to the Washington Post for the duration of 12 weeks (expected costs: 21 €).
