Comment/Description

This seminar will attempt to examine the social phenomenon of scandal. Moving beyond the taint of gossip and frivolity and trying to understand scandals as symptoms of a culture at a specific point in time, we will try to disentangle the complex dynamics between transgression, public outrage, and media attention. Our work will be informed by (socio)-historical, cultural, and media studies approaches. Examples of relevant scandals will be considered from British culture and society of the 19th and 20th centuries.
