Comment/Description

In this seminar, students will engage with Native American history and culture through the lens of different types of media from different time periods, ranging from 19th century newspapers, autobiographical writings, pamphlets, novels, film, and music, to contemporary podcasts.
The examples discussed in class will give insight into the issues of Indigenous America through the eyes of the community. During the seminar, we will discuss primary documents on topics such as reservation life, boarding school experiences, politics, assimilation and citizenship (Reorganization, Termination), social and environmental justice, as well as Indigenous self-determination. The scope of the seminar is to provide students with a broad overview of US American history as Indigenous histories and cultures of self-empowerment. Additionally, students will sharpen their media literacy and critical thinking skills, as well as their ability to approach historical and contemporary documents of Native American history with close reading strategies.

Readings and seminar schedule will be made available via stud.IP in the beginning of the semester.
