Comment/Description

This course deals with Sephardi Jews in the Middle East and North Africa during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We will describe the structure of the Jewish communities following the expulsion from Spain (1492), and their multiple paths to modernity. We will focus on various intellectuals and thinkers who operated in Spehardi communities, thereby learning on a broad spectrum of views regarding the Spehardi modernity: Rabbinical, Arab, Francophone, Zionist, and others.
