During the last decade, American playwrights have written many fascinating plays that engage with a wide variety of topics from the current social and political environment. In this course, we will examine a group of outstanding playwrights, who have received much critical acclaim in the US (Pulitzer Prize and/or Tony Award winners), and explore several exciting plays about topics that range from “9/11” (Neil LaBute, The Mercy Seat, 2003) and “Assimilation/Alienation” (August Wilson, Radio Golf, 2008) to “Art” (John Logan, Red, 2010), “Iraq” (Quiara Alegria Hudes, Water By the Spoonful, 2012), and “Islamophobia” (Ayad Aktar, Disgraced, 2013).
