Kommentar/Beschreibung

Literary Chicago

In this seminar, we will focus on Chicago as an exciting ‘literary landscape’ worth discovering. We will read and discuss important writers from the late 19th to the late 20th century such as Theodore Dreiser, Upton Sinclair, Carl Sandburg, Lorraine Hansberry, Sterling A. Brown, Gwendolyn Brooks, and David Mamet. The literary works on which we will focus are novels, plays as well as individual poems. These texts will provide a variety of perspectives on Chicago — male, female, white, and African-American. Moreover, we will also look at the city’s non-literary cultural heritage and discuss its history and architecture.
Students are expected to have read Sister Carrie by October 13th, 2010. The second novel to be read and prepared will be Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. This book can be downloaded and printed out as an ebook from the library server (see links below). For the seminar you MUST print out a hard copy of the book and bring it to class. Please buy or use the same editions of Sister Carrie and The Jungle (see ISBN) which you find in the required reading list below!
