Comment/Description

What is and why do we study literature? What is required for an analysis and interpretation of literary works in a scholarly manner? What skills do we need for a systematic approach to literary studies? This course is designed to acquaint students with the terminology, methods, and techniques of literary studies by analyzing texts taken from various literary periods and genres, offering a first overview of American literary history from the colonial period to the present, combined with an introduction to the development of the genres prose, poetry, and drama and the analytical tools to analyze these texts.

This course is organized as a digital course, consisting of weekly reading assignments, quizzes and thematic video clips (asynchronous elements) and weekly meetings (either in person or on a digital platform, tba) where we will have the opportunity to discuss the respective topics and reflect on our reading experiences (synchronous elements).

To pass this module, students will also have to attend a tutorial and attend a tour through the library (either in person or digital, tba).
