What are possible theoretical approaches to literature? Theories and concepts represent tool kits (or, put differently, interpretive frameworks) that help us to better understand a given literary text. It is, however, not always easy to apply theories to literature; sometimes it can be a daunting task. In this course, we will begin with a discussion on the different ways in which we can examine a literary piece and then alternate between sessions on landmark theories and debates (i.e. author-, text-, reader-, and gender-/ethnicity-oriented theories and concepts) and sessions on applying them to a selection of American short stories written by core authors from the nineteenth century up to the present (e.g., Edgar Allan Poe, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Ernest Hemingway, Donald Barthelme, and Yiyun Li). Our main goal is to determine the degree of usefulness of applying theories to literary texts. Can we change theoretical constructs for our purposes? What are the limits of theory?
