Comment/Description

New Orleans is a large metropolitan city which epitomizes the American "melting pot." A true bubbling cauldron of many races and cultures, it embodies diversity and creativity in so many ways - among these are music, food, film, and literature. Our multimedia tour will begin with a short overview of the city's unique history before we delve into the jazzy rhythms and rhymes of the undisputed "birthplace of jazz." Our main focus, however, will be on literature: Kate Chopin's The Awakening (1899) - which will introduce us to Créole culture and a strong female character who struggles for greater personal freedom; Walker Percy's The Moviegoer (1961) - which will permit us to examine a critical moment in a young stockbroker's life who undergoes an existential crisis and prefers dreams and movies to real life; and Josh Neufeld's graphic novel A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge (2007-2008, 2010) - which will enable us to understand the consequences of Hurricane Katrina from multiple-multicultural viewpoints. Our journey will also include a stop at the movies, as we explore the role of New Orleans on screen.
