Teilnehmende | This course aims to introduce students to the state as an increasingly important and intriguingly complex object of anthropological enquiry. We will critically discuss classical theoretical inspirations in the works of Weber, Marx and Gramsci as well as more recent neo-Marxist and Foucaultian contributions. The main focus will be on the development of the anthropological theory and ethnography of the state from classical Africanist treatments to the current state of the art. We will address the question of whether and how the contemporary anthropological preference for a deconstruction and enculturation of the state could be reconciled with its study as a set of social relations. In addition, we will touch upon the historical evolution of the state, the specificities of postcolonial and postsocialist states, and transformations of statehood in the age of globalisation. |
