Kommentar/Beschreibung

The course is aimed at providing an understanding of what agricultural innovations, and how innovation processes can be studied. The course provides a theoretical background on agricultural innovations, their management and diffusion from both economic and sociological perspectives.
The course covers the following themes:
(i) economic foundations of the emergence, adoption and diffusion of agricultural innovations;
(ii) Management and policies to fostering innovations
(iii) System perspectives in understanding agricultural innovations
(iv) Innovations for sustainable agriculture
To provide a holistic understanding of the innovations, the course will use a combination of systems perspectives and micro and institutional economic theories as well as provide a review of historical trends in diffusion of innovations in agriculture. Selected theoretical, empirical and policy-oriented studies will be emphasized to explain how the agricultural innovations systems are organized.
The course is designed to maximize student engagement with course material through interactive lectures, group reflection on the theories offered, and an individual engagement of the presented literature through making excerpts of the reading materials. Each week will start with a lecture presenting a theory or a design approach, followed by a group discussion on concrete case-studies and applications of the discussed materials.
The lectures are divided into two main blocks:
1. Economics of innovation adoption and diffusion (Dr. Nodir Djanibekov)
2. Systemic approaches to innovation (Dr. Frans Hermans)
