Comment/Description

Early Modern English (EME) is the third important period in the development of the English language after Old English (OE) and Middle English (ME). In this course, we first give an overview of OE and ME in order to provide a context for EME.
Then we describe the various dimensions of EME (spelling, pronunciation, lexicon, morphology and syntax) in close connection with the social history of the time. Special emphasis is put on reading EME texts (extracts from Shakespeare and the King James Bible as well as treatises on language). In all this, we keep an eye on causes and results of language change.
