Comment/Description

This course explores issues and debates related to heritage-making practices and discourses and their worldwide recognition. The UNESCO World Heritage List represents one of the most successful transnational projects embraced all over the world. How have notions and conceptualizations of heritage been accepted and appropriated worldwide? Looking into processes of heritage conceptualization and contestation will expose the specific agendas and actors involved in heritage-making processes.
After a general introduction on urban (World) Heritage Sites, a particular emphasis will be given to ethnographic perspectives on heritage-making processes through the analysis of studies on the ground. This focus also highlights practical issues faced by anthropologists working in and on heritage sites. Personal experiences will be shared on the basis of fieldwork carried out in two World Heritage cities, Istanbul and Melaka, to look in practice to the challenges of urban and multi-sited research.
