Skills to be acquired in this module
  • Competence for basic coupling mechanisms in magnetism
  • Ability to explain magnetic structures, magnetic order, and domains based on different interactions for thin films and solid-state systems
  • Ability to explain structure formation processes at solid surfaces and to interpret 2D crystallography data
  • Understanding for fundamental adsorption and desorption processes and their application in materials science
  • Competence to use the quasiparticle concept for discussion of 2D electronic and vibronic structures

  • Basics of magnetism:
- isolated magnetic moments
- interactions (crystal fields, dipole-dipole interaction, exchange, RKKY, spin-orbit coupling, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction)
- magnetic order and magnetic structures
- magnetism in metals
- domains
  • Basics of surface physics:
- structure analysis of surfaces: 2D crystallography, image in reciprocal and real space
- elementary processes on surfaces: adsorption and desorption, phonons
- electron spectroscopy: electronic structure, chemical surface analysis
