COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this course, we discuss representations of British tourism and holiday in film and cinema. We introduce the subject with the British summer holiday film, exemplified in 'The Inbetweeners Movie', focusing on the complicated relationship between Britain and Europe. We then study two films each by filmmakers Michael Winterbottom and Joanna Hogg, who examine notions of (trans)national identity and belonging, class, and gender through the use of domestic and foreign holidays. 'The Trip' and 'The Trip to Italy' negotiate questions of Britishness and masculinity through comedy and humour, while Joanna Hogg investigates issues of class, alienation, and the aesthetics of contemporary realism and everyday life in 'Unrelated' and 'Archipelago'.

SYLLABUS
Please make sure to watch the films prior to class. There will be no public screenings of the whole films. All films are available as (secondhand) DVDs. 'The Inbetweeners', 'Unrelated' and 'Archipelago' can also be streamed commercially. Required secondary reading will be made available.
