Participants | This seminar explores recent debates and issues of biomedicine in Africa. Over the past decades diseases like HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and more recently Ebola have powerfully shaped our imagination of the African continent. Ideas like Global Health have been crafting a field of biomedical knowledge production by designing experiments, interventions, and measures that cannot be carried out elsewhere. At the same time scientific understandings of health have also changed toward a more ‘holistic’ perspective on health that is cognizant of war, poverty, and now environmental degradation. In this seminar we will explore the formation of biomedicine in Africa through a genealogical analysis of biomedicine in Africa. We will ask how health problems become real through scientific problematizations and reasonings about human and nonhuman life, and its variegated entanglements. Based on the genealogical critique of biomedicine we will debate what future health in Africa might mean. |
