Contemporary borders and bureaucracies have transformed migration and its representations across the globe. Anthropological theory and methods can help develop our understanding of the intensifying efforts of states to control the movement of people who are forced to move as a consequence of war, environmental disaster or developmental projects. In a period distinguished by the processes of globalization and the associated proliferation of goods and information flowing across state borders, how do people who move across or live and work along such national boundaries come to understand and use them? How do state bureaucracies and administrative centres produce those who cross borders as different? And why are displaced persons who migrate forced to live within encampment structures? This course will look at the relationship between migration and state borders, delving into the increasing attempts – many of them punitive – by supranational organisations and nation-states to stem the flow of people in a globalised world. We will critically examine migration and its relationship to humanitarianism, the state, borders, politics and identity. The students will pay special attention to regions such as the Horn of Africa, the Sahel, the Mediterranean, and the European Union, but will touch on other regions as well. After completing the course, students will be familiar with humanitarian responses to forced migration in the Mediterranean, the criminalisation of migration through EU bordering policies, the practice of encampment by state and supra-state authorities in East Africa, and the increasing use of biometric data to track and monitor migrant mobility globally.
