Comment/Description

The genre of slave narratives, “autobiographical works written (or dictated) by men and women of African descent who had endured New World slavery” (Appiah xi) was a direct result of the system of slavery in place in the United States. In this course we will read eighteenth and nineteenth century slave narratives. Students will be familiarized with the genres “slave narrative” and “neo-slave narrative” and learn how to interpret these texts in light of their historical contexts, their socio-political impact, and their aesthetic complexity.

Primary Texts:
Olaudah Equiano: The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, The African, Written by Himself.
Frederick Douglass: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave.
Harriet Jacobs: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.
A complete list of primary and secondary texts will be provided at the beginning of the semester.

Studienleistungen: Research Question, Session Protocol, Weekly Forum Entries
Modulleistung: Term Paper (BA), Oral Exam (LA)
