Comment/Description

Although remembered chiefly in collective memory for his six successive marriages, King Henry VIII nevertheless made his mark in history through permanent changes to the English social and political life, e.g. with the dissolution of the monasteries and the break with Papal rule over the English church or in the first promulgation of the possibility of a female succession to the English crown. This seminar seeks to explore the Tudors' representation and various functions across different media beyond the mnemonic rhyme "divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived". Beginning with the pivotal role of the printing press in Henry's time, we will try to piece together a medial legacy in literature, music, film, and the new media.

Key aspects of cultural studies to be considered will include media and closely associated concepts such as representation and adaptation as well as aspects of memory and memorial culture.

Students are expected to start reading Shakespeare's play as early as possible.
