Kommentar/Beschreibung

The course consists of a selection of topics from the history of philosophy in Poland, or Polish intellectual history. In addition to the main line of historical presentation of eminent figures in the history of philosophy in Poland from the middle ages to the 20th century, more general and universal philosophical problems are addressed and they include, for example, methodological question of the very possibility of any national philosophy and the methods of researching it, or the more general problem of the methods of studying and writing histories of philosophy.
The course also relates Polish philosophers to European thought and addresses problems of universal topicality (discussion on human nature, ius gentium, the ways of developing philosophical outlook etc.). The narrative on philosophy in Poland cannot focus solely on the Polish context, as Poland is not an isolated intellectual island and Polish philosophers were acquainted with their contemporary philosophical tendencies (various trends in medieval scholastic philosophy, Kantianism, Hegelianism, which were assimilated or sometimes rejected). They did not receive their education exclusively in Polish universities, but also travelled to foreign intellectual centers (first of all to Germany, but also to England and Russia), and sometimes their works proved to be influential not only among Polish readers. Relations of Polish philosophy and philosophers with European thought include naturally inspirations from their contemporary philosophical traditions of Germany, France, England and Russia, but also from ancient philosophy, especially, and not surprisingly, from Plato and Aristotle.
The course includes traditional lectures and presentation of historical material, but also discussions of source texts, for example, some papers or chapters available in English or German, which were originally written by Polish philosophers in these languages (e.g. Cieszkowski’s chapter on historiosophy and on messianism, passages from Lutosławski on Plato and on the classification and progress of philosophical views) or were posthumously translated (e.g. Chwistek’s chapters on the multiplicity of realities or Tatarkiewicz’s article on writing a history of philosophy).
