Kommentar/Beschreibung

British director Ken Loach once argued that ‘the only reason to make films that are a reflection on history is to talk about the present.’ In our seminar, we will consider whether the importance of creating filmic representations of historical events, developments, and figures is indeed restricted to their topical usefulness. The films selected for the course cover major concerns of twentieth-century British society, culture, and politics. They focus on, but are not limited to, the two world wars, women’s rights, the ‘troubles’ in Northern Ireland, the changing role of the monarchy, and the question of national identity.

Prospective students should note that the course includes required viewing (see below). While we will watch various scenes in class over the course of the term, there will be no public screenings of the whole films. Participants are expected to obtain and watch all films prior to the scheduled class discussions. The films can be accessed through commercial providers online; others are available as inexpensive DVD, or in the university library. There will be short assignments during the semester, and an oral presentation. The module exam (“Prüfungsleistung”) will be a term paper (8.000-9.000 words) on key aspects of the representation of twentieth-century Britain on film. The unwritten assignment (“Studienleistung”) will be a work-in-progress presentation (10 mins) and discussion of the prospective term paper topic.

In addition, the course is open to students who wish to write their “Staatsexamensklausur – Arbeit unter Aufsicht” in “Anglistik: Kulturwissenschaft”.
