Comment/Description

The purpose of this series of workshops is for students to learn to express ideas in an ac-ademic form - i.e. the form often encountered in journal articles and textbooks - with regards to both structure and to tone.

We will first meet en masse in a session that will provide the theoretical groundwork for the remainder of the semester. In this first meeting I will assign the topic and readings to be dealt with over the remainder of the semester. I will then meet with small groups in order to focus on your individual pieces of work. I am happy to answer queries or concerns by email, or to meet with students individually, between timetabled sessions.

The overarching aim, as suggested above, is to master academic writing, specifically in English. Within this broad goal are a number of important elements, including the following:

- The use of appropriate language, i.e. an academic ‘voice’
- The importance of a clear, premeditated structure
- The need for research and the placing of ideas in conversation with one another
- The importance of referencing
- The value or critical analysis

If you are interested in an individual session, please register via Zentrum für Lehrerbildung (zlb@uni-halle.de).
