Kommentar/Beschreibung

COURSE GOALS AND DESCRIPTION:

The American Civil War (1861-65), as any other war, was fought and endured by people. More often than not, wars are discussed as a chronology of battles and political decisions. The same holds true for the American Civil War, although, in more recent years, the emphasis has shifted towards the actions and the role of the people who participated in the war such as soldiers, politicians, spies, doctors, and nurses.

This course sets out to explore the perspectives, the collective and personal viewpoints of people involved in the war – on the battle fields as well as on the home front, in the North as well as in the South. It tries to inquire into the experiences of the people at the time to help us understand what the Civil War meant to them and how they lived through it. We will read soldiers’ accounts, women’s diaries, children’s magazines, essays by politicians and writers, and Civil War fiction.
In addition, we shall broaden our perspective by looking at Civil War literature produced between 1865 and 1900 and by examining 20th century Civil War fiction film in order to investigate how subsequent generations of Americans perceived the time of the Civil War.

The overall aim of the course is to provide the historical background to the war, and, foremost, to get an idea of “what it was like” for people who lived it.
