Kommentar/Beschreibung

This study and research group is open to all senior students and postgraduates who are
interested in, and work on, topics related to the anthropology of tourism. During its meetings, those who are members of the group but also outside guests present the data and results of their research activities in various fields of the anthropology of tourism. In addition, seminal texts from the field are read and discussed together. Regularly, there are viewings of films. One of the aims of this group is to aid participants in devising research projects and applying for funding successfully, either individual projects or joint ones. One of the major applications which has been successful so far is the project, funded by the German Israeli Foundation from 1.1.2009 onwards for three years and conducted by Anja Peleikis, Jackie Feldman (Israel) and Burkhard Schnepel. It is on “Holocaust Tourism”, focussing on the Jewish Museum in Berlin and the New Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. All in all, at present there are around 10 Ma thesis, five doctoral theses and two habilitation projects which work in the field of the anthropology of tourism, such as “ethnic tourism” in Mozambique, “sustainable tourism” on Rodrigues Island, “backpacker lore”, tourist guides, roots tourism to former Eastern Prussia or the globalization of beach life in Mauritius.
