This series of lectures and seminars discusses the enduring significance of religion and ritual in our implicit understanding of the social nature of the political. First as anthropological concepts of general analytical relevance, but also for the coherent and holistic dimension they keep embodying in different cultures beyond the various processes of change and reordering, they encounter through their interaction with other universes of value. This comparative enquiry tries to bring light on these concepts both from a more systematic consideration of their interrelation in our own culture and from the perspectivist and relativizing lesson some regional and current configurations contemporary Indian society provides. Singling out for the main two particular case studies which used to be former small Princely States before their merging into the democratic Nation-State of the Indian Union, the argument will focus on the transformations and shifts the royal function socio-culturally encountered to survive its political erasing. The development will show how it secures its recurrent and constituting ritual presence with respect to space and time, affinity, land tenure and debt, subverting or inverting its relation to local cults and tutelary gods while avoiding, condensing or confronting the overhanging frame of the democratic order. To these first ethnographic illustrations, other examples borrowed from parallel fieldwork, thesis and published works hill indicate potential ways to further the perspective beyond the obvious reduced scope of the present exposition.
