This seminar introduces the students to female
American poets from the late 19th century to the
present. We will read and explore contributions by
well-known poets such as Emily Dickinson or
Gwendolyn Brooks, but also those of lesser known
writers such as Sarah Piatt or Gertrud
Schnackenburg. The seminar
offers a profound introduction
to the genre of poetry. It is
especially recommendable to
students who plan to choose a
‘poetic’ topic for the
Zwischenprüfung in American
Literature but also for all others
interested in or curious about
this supposedly difficult genre.
Exemplary readings of poems in open and closed forms, helpful secondary sources as well as creative writing experiments will be themes of the seminar. Students are expected to read and prepare poems in detail as well as secondary literature for the individual sessions, to write one-page papers, and prepare a presentation in English.
