In recent years, vampires have become omnipresent in Western literature and culture. Movies, books, graphic novels, operas, and pop songs about vampires document the ever-growing fascination with this protean creature of the night. In this course, we will briefly explore the history of vampires (with a particular focus on their gothic origins) before examining the ways in which vampires are represented in different kinds of media (literature, film, and music). Special attention will be paid to Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922) and Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive (2013), and Heinrich Marschner’s Der Vampyr (1828) which will be performed at the Moritzburg in July. To top it all off you will have a chance to discuss the opera with the director Wolf Widder.
