Migration seems to be a universal phenomenon. But why should and would people migrate? What motivates them? Is it, as we often hear in the media, primarily for economic reasons? What kinds of theories are there to explain centuries and different kinds of migrations? These are some of the questions we will raise in this seminar. Some of the specific themes we will study are the following: migration studies and history of migrations, primarily in Europe and the USA; migration theories; kinds of migrations (labour, asylum seeking, voluntary, forced, feminine, transnational and the like) and approaches to the study of migration. The seminar will look at migration as a historical but also more contemporary process and examine the types of questions and theories anthropological studies have addressed. We will critically examine these, especially from the perspective of theory, methodology and in terms of their results.
