Comment/Description

The aim of the course is to familiarise students with issues related to the migration movements of South Asian residents (both within the subcontinent and to other regions of the world, in historical and contemporary terms), as well as to discuss the most important issues related to the presence and functioning of the South Asian diaspora in European countries, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

In particular, during the course the following issues will be discussed:
― migrations within South Asia in historic perspective (before 1947)
― migrations within South Asia after 1947 (including labour migrations, student and staff mobility and refugees)
― historical and present reasons for migration from South Asia to other parts of the world
― description of the most important South Asian diasporas in the world:
a) Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar, Reunion)
b) Latin and Central America (West Indies, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica)
c) North America (Canada, USA)
d) Europe (Great Britain, Italy, Sweden)
e) Near East and Gulf States
f) South-East Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong)
e) Australia and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji Islands)
