Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course examines the origins and the functioning of the three main models of executive-legislative relations in contemporary democracies: presidentialism, parliamentarism and semi-presidentialism. The course consists of three parts. The first part explores the basic typology and the historical evolution of the different systems of democratic government. The second part surveys the main effects of these institutional variations. The third part will examine the presidential elections and politics in several case studies. Students are expected to participate in the on-line class discussions and are required to write a final research paper, which will determine their final grade in the course.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

On-line discussion
The professor will post a number of discussion questions related to the assigned readings at the start of every week. During the week, every student must post at least two (2) responses, each of which must be at least 200 words long. These responses do not have to be structured essays but they must relate to the assigned questions.

Final paper (100%)
Students must submit a final research paper by September 30, 2020. The paper must deal with one of the topics covered in the course in the context a single country. The length of the paper will be 5000 words (20 pages double spaced) for MA students and 3750 words (15 pages double spaced) for BA students. MA papers must be based on at least 15 sources, BA papers must reference and cite at least 10 sources. Students will have to submit a paper proposal to the professor by email no later than July 31.

On-line meetings
We will have an on-line meeting for one hour every Monday from 2 to 3 PM.
