Comment/Description

The guest lectures will be held by Dr. Zeray Yihdego, a senior lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. His lectures will explore the foundations of international humanitarian law (IHL), including but not limited to, the basic features, principles and rules of engagement; the rules applicable to difficult types of armed conflicts that may or may not necessarily fit into the traditional state-to-state war such as civil wars. Mixed wars and operations of UN forces are also covered. These and other relevant aspects will be looked at in the light of selected aspects of public international law ranging from international human rights law, the law on the use of force and the status of non-state-actors such as the Islamic State to that of the various mechanisms that are available to implement and enforce IHL through national measures, the International Criminal Court and humanitarian actors such as the ICRC.
